What Shape Do I Want?

Whilst the focus in breast augmentation is often on the size and look, the breast shape you want after your operation is just as important. The shape of your breasts after your operation will be related to a number of variables, including the shape and size of your breasts before the operation, the shape of the implant inserted, the location of the implant (whether on top or behind the pectoral muscle), how high or low the implant is placed relative to the nipple, and finally, the size and projection of the implant.

The shape and size of your breasts before your operation is one of the most important determinants of the final shape. Someone with a flat A chest will end up with a very different shape after surgery to someone with a small droopy C cup, regardless of the shape and size of the breast implant inserted or its placement on top or behind the pectoral muscle. In general, I classify breast shape as round, round tending teardrop and teardrop. Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and projections from round to conical to teardrop. A round breast shape should look round both standing and lying down. A teardrop breast shape will similarly look teardrop both standing and lying down. A natural rounded breast shape or round tending teardrop breast shape will generally look teardrop standing up and round lying down. This is best achieved by placement of the implant under the muscle and placed lower on the chest wall.

The smaller your breast before surgery the more important is the shape of the breast implant inserted in determining the final shape. A round implant inserted into a flat A chest will give a round breast shape regardless of placement or size. Similarly, a teardrop shaped implant in this case will give a teardrop shaped breast. The larger, and importantly, the more projected the implant relative to your breast before surgery, the more important it becomes in determining your final breast shape.

In my practise, younger patients tend to prefer the round breast shape whilst those who have had children tend to prefer the teardrop breast shape. The most popular, however, is the round tending teardrop breast shape which appears teardrop on standing and round on lying down.
