FAQs

What does plastic surgery mean?

The term plastic surgery is derived from the ancient Greek word “Plastikos”, which means to mould or give form. Plastic surgery aims to modify the shape of body structures to improve or restore the appearance of the deformed part. The interpersonal skills, technical expertise, and operative judgment of a plastic surgeon are crucial for a successful outcome.

Plastic surgery is most commonly used for breast augmentation. In aesthetic or cosmetic surgery, plastic surgery procedures can be used to enhance or restore the natural appearance of the body.
All plastic surgeons are trained in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Do you know the difference between a cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Plastic surgery includes reconstructive as well as aesthetic or cosmetic procedures. Reconstructive surgery is usually performed to modify structural abnormalities caused by trauma, disease, cancer or birth defects.

Cosmetic surgery is usually performed to modify the structure and appearance of facial and other body structures, for aesthetic reasons.

How does a plastic surgeon differ from a cosmetic surgeon?

Specialist Plastic Surgeons possess a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), a standard surgical training and qualification in Australia. A plastic surgeon has to undergo an intensive training in plastic and reconstructive surgery to perform invasive surgical procedures.
Doctors with only a MBBS (bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery) degree are not trained in invasive surgical procedures. However, in Australia any surgically unqualified doctors can call themselves surgeons and practice cosmetic surgery. Hence ensure that your surgeon has a FRACS degree. All members of Australian Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) are FRACS qualified to provide the highest quality of care to all their patients. All the members of Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have been certified as specialist plastic surgeons by Medicare Australia.
